Why Won't My Apple Music Download Songs? 8 Ways to Fix

"Apple Music won't download songs or albums to my iPhone when I click on the download cloud icon. It either spins endlessly or will begin the download (a partially completed circle icon) but not finish it."

Downloading music to your iPhone is a great way to ensure you always have something to listen to. Apple Music allows you to download music to your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch/Android/Mac/Windows for offline listening. So you can still listen to the music when you don't have an internet connection. This uses storage space on your device. However, if you have trouble in downloading Apple Music songs/albums/playlists to your device, follow below solutions.

Solution 1 Turn on "Download over Cellular"

If you are downloading Apple Music songs using Cellular. Check whether the option "Download over Cellular" is enabled. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Music, scroll download and turn on "Download over Cellular".

Solution 2 Check the Wifi

Check whether the wifi network (maybe public wifi or a university wifi Connection) doesn’t allow downloads. If so, try to download when you connected to a different wifi.

Solution 3 Check the storage space

If your device is almost full and can't free up space, you might get a Storage Almost Full alert. If you see this alert, you should check the storage recommendations or you need to offload some less-used content like videos and apps.

Go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage. You might see a list of recommendations for optimizing your device's storage, followed by a list of installed apps and the amount of storage each one uses. Tap an app's name for more information about its storage. Here you can:

  • Offload the app, which frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data.
  • Delete the app, which removes the app and its related data.
  • Depending on the app, you might be able to delete some of its documents and data.

Solution 4 Change music download quality

Lossless files will use significantly more space on your device and decrease download speed. To download Apple Music songs faster and more stable, you'd better set it to download high quality music(AAC 256kbps), not lossless.

Go to Settings > Music > Audio Quality - Downloads - High Quality.

  2. From the menu bar at the top of your screen, choose Music > Preferences.

Solution 5 Delete music and music videos

When you download songs from Apple Music to iPhone, you can choose High Quality(AAC 256kbps), Lossless(ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz), or Hi-Res Lossless(ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz). Lossless files will use significantly more space on your device. 1- GB of space could store approximately: 3000 songs at High Quality, or 1000 songs with Lossless, or 200 songs with Hi-Res Lossless. If downloaded Apple Music songs take up too much storage, you can manually delete some songs that you don't listen to.
